Can AI replace personal training?

AI like ChatGPT has become so popular in the past few years. It can answer multiple questions quickly and eloquently, edit your messages, and generate so much more. I find more people using AI for workout and nutrition plans. How accurate and helpful can these be?

For the most part, AI just finds the answers online and streamlines it for you so it saves you time by doing all that research for you. I personally have not used AI to create workout or nutrition programs, but I know people who have and have seen people doing it online. I also recently read a study comparing a workout program generated by AI versus the suggestions from the American College of Sports Medicine. There were some similarities, but some of the recommended sets and reps were not in the correct ranges. Also, ChatGPT did not include the weights the client should perform.

From what I’ve seen, I think AI can be a great tool to help with one’s fitness journey, but it cannot replace a fitness professional. AI is supplemental not a substitute for training. It can educate people and simplify things which may help answer people’s questions or ease them into exercise, but there are limitations. It cannot watch your form, correct your form, give you the right weights, and so on. It can’t be in the gym with you. As a trainer, I watch my clients’ form and modify exercises and workouts whenever necessary. I make the workouts personalized to them and not just pull something from the Internet. AI may make information more easily obtainable, but it will never replace the connection of a human being.
