How To Overcome Gym Anxiety

New to the gym or restarting your fitness journey? I understand how terrifying it can be to start working out in the gym. Trust me, I’ve been there! I remember being so scared of people looking at me or making a mistake that I only did cardio and core. Now, after years of experience working out and working as a personal trainer, here are my tips to overcome gym anxiety!

  1. Have a plan – If you have a workout plan or routine, the more likely you are to stick with it, and you’ll know exactly what to do in the gym.
  2. Work out with a friend – Having a workout partner can make the workout more fun and also make you feel more comfortable.
  3. Attend a fitness class – Having an instructor to teach and guide you during a class is great for learning new exercises and correct form, but it’s also more enjoyable since you’re doing it with others!
  4. Work with a trainer – Even if it’s for one session or for many, it helps having someone teach good form, progress your exercises, and help you achieve your fitness goals!   5. Let go of the fear – When I first started working out, I was terrified by the thought of people watching me at the gym. In reality, people aren’t watching you. They’re usually occupied with their workout. Let go of the fear and shift the focus on you and your fitness! The gym is a safe space, and it’s there to help us get fitter and healthier!
  6. Be patient – Just like your goals, it takes time to get over gym anxiety. The more you go to the gym and face your fears, the sooner you’ll get used to being there. Eventually the gym will be a place of comfort, and working out will become automatic!
