With the three aspects of fitness: movement, nutrition, and regeneration, the latter is something I struggle with, even as a trainer. I work out 5 – 6 days a week and hit my macros pretty well, but sleeping and getting enough rest has been a challenge. Having adequate recovery after your workout, allows you to build muscle, have enough energy for your workouts, and keeps you in a good mood. Without good recovery, we may be more prone to injury during our workouts, unable to work out as efficiently, or have mood swings.
Some ways of ensuring great post workout recovery are: getting enough protein and fuel in general, adequate hydration, having rest days (even light exercise or cardio is okay if you can’t completely rest), meditation, getting 7 – 8 hours of sleep, napping if you can’t get enough sleep, foam rolling, stretching, massage, and even participating in hobbies or self-care. Giving your body (and mind) time to regenerate will pay off in the long run. You will feel energized, happy, and healthy, and your body will thank you for it!
