Best Time To Work Out?

“What time is the best time to work out?” “When should I work out to burn the most calories?” I get asked these questions all the time, and my answer is always the same – the best time to work out is the time you make to work out.

As a personal trainer, I have clients at all times of the day, from 7 AM through 7 PM. In terms of workout timing and effectiveness, the most important time will always be the time you make to work out.

I find that many people getting back into exercise want to train very early at like 5 or 6 AM. They’re motivated to restart their fitness journey and begin their day with a workout which is great! However, working out that early may not be realistic for most people. We can work our way to exercising at that time, but I always recommend people to choose a time they know they’re going to commit and stick with! I also find that people think they need to work out for 2 hours a day to get to their goals. This isn’t the case. You can still reach your fitness goals without doing 2 hour workouts. It’s about moving with purpose every day, even if it’s just for a little bit!

Here are some tips to fit fitness into your life (pun intended):

  1. Choose a workout time that works for you!
    • If you’re not a morning person, then don’t force yourself to be! Look at times that work for you! You can work out anytime of the day.
    • If you have a time that you can commit to then you’re more likely to succeed!
  2. Don’t have time to work out the full hour? Try working out for 20-30 minutes.
    • I understand some of us may have busy schedules and that’s okay! Even a 20-30 minute workout a day is effective! Something is always better than nothing.
    • You can also find ways to be active throughout the day. Take a 5 minute walk during your break. Take the stairs. Stretch. Do some squats before a meeting. There are so many ways to sneak in exercise!
  3. You don’t need to work out 6 days a week. Try 2 to 3 workouts and then work your way up!
    • In order to succeed, we need realistic habits. If you can only dedicate 2 hour long workouts a week right now, that’s amazing! You can still get creative in finding ways to move throughout the day too.
  4. You don’t need to work out the same time every day.
    • Our schedules can vary so it’s okay if your exercise time varies too.

Whether you love working out in the morning or if you only have time to work out for 30 minutes, a workout (even if it’s short) is still better than no workout!
