3 Ways To Avoid Burnout In Your Fitness Routine

Burnout doesn’t just happen with work. It can also happen with working out. Maybe you’re lifting really heavy or running for long periods of time without enough rest. Not only can you get burnout, potentially lose workout motivation, but you could also risk overtraining.

Here are 3 ways to avoid burnout in your fitness routine.

  1. Add variety – I find we mentally burnout from our routine if we keep doing the same exercises or activities without any adjustments or changes. Change up the reps, sets, weights, time, or the exercise. Maybe you’ve only been lifting and running. Try a group fitness class or a hike outdoors. We need variety to keep things lively and interesting.
  2. Prioritize rest – Rest days are just as important as the workout. If you don’t get enough rest then your body can’t properly recover. Inadequate rest and sleep can also make you feel groggy and fatigued. If you absolutely cannot rest then make it a light movement day. Have at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night and 1 rest day out of the week!
  3. Schedule deload week – A deload week is exactly what it sounds like. You decrease the load of your exercises whether it’s the weight, sets, or reps. That way you’re still moving, but you’re body gets enough rest so you can push yourself in the following weeks. My boyfriend and I are on the same workout program, and we typically have a deload week every 4-6 weeks. It’s a nice “reset” in our workout program.

Burnout in our workout routine is real. It can happen from doing the same routine over and over again, or it could be from lack of rest. Prevent burnout by changing things up, getting enough rest and sleep, and scheduling a deload week in your program!
