Common Mistakes Beginners Make In Their Workouts

January is probably one of the busiest, if not the busiest month for gyms and fitness studios. We’re all excited about the new year and our new goals. Many people are regular gym goers, and some are new or coming back after a long break. If you’re a beginner, here are some common mistakes I see people make when working out.

  • Prioritizing weight over form – We get so excited that we just keep adding weight but then we sacrifice form. Having great form protects your bones, joints, and muscles. It also allows you to use the correct muscles for the exercise so be sure to prioritize form.
  • Watch your form, even when using machines – I usually recommend machines for my clients with injuries because they offer more support than free weights. However, that does not mean you won’t get injured using a machine. Make sure it’s on the right settings and that you’re using the correct muscle groups!
  • Going too hard in the beginning – I see so many people go from 0 to 100. They’ll push themselves, which is great, but sometimes they go too far and end up unbearably sore or hurt. Start slow and gradually build upon your workout routine!
  • Letting doubt and fear get in the way – I know starting something new can be scary, but don’t let your fears get to you!
    • If you’re afraid that people are looking at you in the gym, don’t be! People are usually too busy looking at themselves to be looking at you.
    • Remember growth happens outside of your comfort zone!
  • Being hard on yourself – Show yourself some compassion and remember to be patient! You’re just starting your fitness journey or returning back to working out. You’re doing your best, and the results will come with time!
