Hello November! Can you believe Thanksgiving is 3 weeks away?! Thanksgiving has to be one of my favorite holidays. We give thanks, spend time with loved ones, and and eat delicious foods! As fun as the holidays are, I also understand how stressful it can be with planning, socializing, and eating.
Besides gratitude, Thanksgiving is centered around exorbitant amounts of foods like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, etc. The list goes on and on! However, there’s no need to be anxious about what we eat on that day. Food is fuel, and one indulgent meal is not going to derail your fitness progress!
With that being said, we can always make our favorite dishes a little healthier! Try these swaps at for Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, or any holiday party!
- Main dish swap – Try serving leaner options like turkey, chicken, or fish
- Snack swap – Snack on veggies with yogurt dip instead of chips and dips
- Casserole swap – Roast vegetables with your favorite low sodium seasonings
- Cooking and baking swap – Use healthy fats when cooking and baking such as olive oil, avocado oil, and canola oil. Limit use of butter and shortenings.
- Sweetener swap – Use cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, allspice, dates, and cloves instead of syrups and added sugars
- Drink swap – Drink apple cider, tea, or water instead of egg nog.
Let me know which swap you’re going to try! Eating (and life in general) is all about balance. You can still eat the foods you love and be healthy! Be sure to eat balanced meals throughout the day and get some movement in before your Thanksgiving dinner!
