Are you lacking motivation to work out? Are you bored of your workouts? Do you feel like you’re in a weird workout “funk?” As a personal trainer, I’m here to tell you it’s okay! It happens. We can’t be 100% excited and motivated to work out all the time. Here are some ways to ignite your workout spark again!
- Add another rest day – It might sound counterintuitive, but if you’ve been working out 5-7 days a week, you might be burnt out. A little extra rest or decreasing your workout frequency just by a day or two can help you recover and feel more energized for your workouts.
- Change your exercises, sets, reps, or overall routine – How long have you been doing the same workout routine? If it’s been awhile then it’d be a good idea to change up your routine. You can do this by incorporating new exercises or changing up the weights, sets, or reps. Taking a fitness class or even working with a trainer (hello me!) can help make things more fresh and exciting!
- Think of how great you’ll feel after the workout – I think the hardest part of working out is actually getting to the gym. Once you’re there, you’re able to exercise so easily! Remind yourself of how amazing it feels after you work out!
- Remind yourself of your why – Why are you working out? Is it for looks? For health? For self-care? Having your reasons why you work out will help you stay eager to hit the gym!
- Get 5-10 minutes of movement in – On days when we don’t feel like moving at all, ask yourself, “what’s the laziest thing I can do right now?” It could be a minute of walking or stretching. Start small. You’ll be surprised by how small actions add up. It can also motivate you to move more and do other activities.
Overall, being in a funk is part of the fitness journey, and workout motivation comes in waves. The trick is to continue getting movement even when motivation isn’t there!
