Make Fitness Fun!

I’ve been a personal trainer since 2016, and a common theme I notice is that sometimes people view working out as punishment or “a necessary evil.” Working out is a priority, but it doesn’t have to be boring or torturous. I understand working out can be uncomfortable, but change doesn’t happen inside your comfort zone!

As a child, I wasn’t excited about P.E. or exercising. I didn’t like getting sweaty, having my heart rate go up, or feeling like I couldn’t breathe. Being sore afterwards wasn’t enjoyable either. It wasn’t until I joined the swim team in high school where I realized I liked the activity and how it made me feel. A part of getting myself and my clients to exercise and actually like exercising is to do things we enjoy!

What are some physical activities you like to do? Make a list of activities. It can be walking, stretching, or even dancing! Write down everything you love that involves moving your body. Next think about how you can do more of these activities every day. If you love walking, try finding extra time throughout the day to sneak in a walk. If you’ve been wanting to get back into your favorite fitness class, try taking it once a week!

The trick is to start slow and do something you enjoy. Make fitness fun! I loved swimming in high school, and then as I entered college, I got into pilates, yoga, and fitness classes. Eventually I ventured out and tried weightlifting and absolutely fell in love with it! Despite my initial dislike of exercise, I grew to love it so much that it inspired me to become a trainer and help others exercise and love fitness too!

Some other ways to make exercise fun are: have a great playlist (this helps so much), wear workout clothes that make you feel good, or have a family member or friend join you on your activity! Exercising doesn’t need to be a drag. Find ways to move that you actually enjoy and keep doing more of it! Make it fun!
