As much as we’d like to get rid of cravings altogether, we can’t do that. Bummer, I know. However, we can understand why we have them and how to better handle them. Cravings are usually more psychological than they are physical. It can be triggered by things such as sight, smell, location, and even the people you’re hanging out with!
When you’re getting a craving, here are some questions you can ask yourself to better understand when and why the occur. You can also start tracking them since there’s almost always a pattern. These questions are taken from Precision Nutrition’s article “Conquer Your Cravings: Break the sinister cycle that makes you overeat.”
- What are you craving?
- Where are you?
- What are you doing?
- What are you feeling physically?
- What are you feeling emotionally?
- What are you thinking?
- Who are you with?
After tracking your cravings for a few weeks, you’ll be able to identify a pattern. Maybe you grab a chocolate bar in the afternoon because you’re tired or bored. Once you’ve identified the trigger, you can try these tips to curb your cravings!
- Give it some time before indulging in your craving. Wait 5 minutes and ask yourself these questions. Are you hungry? Are you bored? Are you tired? The craving could be more emotional than physical.
- Do another activity such as putting together a puzzle, working out, or talking on the phone with a friend. Do something to occupy yourself. Usually the cravings will go away, but if it doesn’t then it means you’re hungry.
- Eat enough throughout the day. Are you ravenous by the end of the day? It could be you’re not eating enough during the day so by the time dinner rolls around, you’re starving and end up overeating.
