How To Stay Active While On Vacation

Hi fitness family! I spent the end of 2024 and the start of 2025 on a family trip to Vietnam and Phuket. We had an amazing time, and it was such a fun way to start the year! Before our trip, I was worried about working out and staying active while I was away so here’s my experience on how I stayed active during our trip!

  • We walked.. A LOT! My family and I walked so much while in Vietnam and Phuket. I averaged about 15,000 steps which is way more than what I would get here in LA. Many places like the restaurants and coffee shops we went to were walkable. We also walked around while sight seeing and during excursions.
    • Walking is such an underrated form of physical activity! The steps and calories really do add up. Fun fact: I didn’t gain any weight despite eating so much food there! I actually lost weight, and it’s probably from all that walking!
  • My family and I went on a tour to Ninh Binh in Vietnam and an elephant sanctuary in Phuket, which also involved walking and enjoying the great outdoors! Our tour in Ninh Binh also involved biking and hiking as part of the excursion.
  • My youngest sister and I also snuck in a workout during our vacation. I unfortunately had gotten food poisoning so there were days I just had to rest. It was an important reminder for me to get enough rest and fluids.
  • I didn’t have a swimsuit on while on the beaches in Phuket (sad I know lol), but we did walk quite a bit. If I had the right attire then I would’ve gone swimming!
  • Before bed I would roll my feet with a foot roller. With all that walking my feet and legs were so tight! I would also periodically stretch throughout the day.

There are definitely many opportunities to stay active while on vacation. From my experience, walking was the easiest! It requires no special equipment, and you’re already walking and exploring new places any way. Excursions and tours are a great way to stay active too. Besides walking, some involve hiking and biking like the tour we did in Ninh Binh, but there are plenty that involve other physical activities too. Lastly, prioritizing rest and stretching are important to staying active. If you don’t rest then you won’t have energy to go about your trip. As for stretching, it helps relieve all the tightness, especially from all that walking! So there it is, my tips on how to stay active based on my recent family trip!
